Today I learned of the passing of Quinton Hoover, one of the original artists of Magic: The Gathering. I absolutely love Quinton’s work, and if I had to narrow it down to just one artist, he is probably my favourite illustrator in the world of gaming. In fact, he is one of my favourite artists of all time, period. I am very saddened by this news, and would like to express how much enjoyment his work has brought me over the years, and how inspiring his uniquely personal and distinctive style has been to me as an artist.
I am lucky enough to have a Middle Earth CCG card signed by Quinton. My brother wrote to him in the mid-90s, and Quinton responded with a lovely letter and signed a bunch of our cards.
If you are not familiar with Quinton’s style, I suggest you investigate his work. It’s beautifully organic, full of strong line work and beautiful washes, and is very evocative of Art Nouveau. The world of Magic: The Gathering is unlikely to see an artist of his ilk again, but his work will continue to inspire and entrance players and viewers for years to come.
Rest in peace, Quinton.
