Cartoon Graveyard

Another old one, but hopefully a good one. I believe this watercolour is from somewhere (somewhen?) around 2001 – 2002. I’m particularly happy with the layers of transparency, especially among the finer thorns and brambles. I also like the wet-on-wet background – the colours create a sensation of twilight in my opinion – though there are definitely some unsightly rough spots in the blending. The contrast of abstracted, stylized elements with a more representational figure seems effective. . . I used similar organic motifs in a number of other illustrations some time after this one.
